Green Design Camp

Building creative confidence in the green heart of Bali

Following some teaching engagements in Singapore, university faculty leaders asked if I might facilitate design workshops in Bali, Indonesia. This sparked the development of a set of educational programs under the banner Green Design Camp, in partnership with the world renowned Green School.

Green School is a non-profit, international school located in a rainforest environment along the Ayung River near Ubud, Bali. The all-bamboo campus was built by master carpenter Jorg Stamm, designer Aldo Landwehr, and teams of local craftspeople. It’s a phenomenally inspiring environment for creative minds. Our hypothesis was that an out-of-the-box experience of sustainable living and hands-on design in the Green School’s extraordinary environment could act as a lever for creative confidence—defined as an individual’s belief in their capacity to create change in the world.

In a collaboration with an outdoor education veteran, I acted as curriculum designer and lead facilitator, as well as looking after brand, website and media. Over a two-year period we delivered programs—either innovation or architecture-based—for almost 300 students from universities and schools in SE Asia & US.

Our innovative programming is in part continued in Green School founder John Hardy’s own Bamboo U, which continues to inspire future design leaders.
